LINZ description: The Volkner Rocks are three volcanic rock stacks attached to White Island (an active volcano) by a submarine ridge known as the Whakaari High. They rise 112 m above sea level in a stark and forbidding group. Beneath the water they are colourful and prolific.
Te Paepae o Aotea (Volkner Rocks) Marine Reserve was created in 2006, and covers 1267 ha in a rough circle around Volkner Rocks.
The reserve is located in the Bay of Plenty 55 km north/north east of Whakatane, and 5 km north west of White Island.
