about New Zealand : DoC Huts

We are somewhat spoiled in New Zealand when it comes to backcountry huts. We have over 1000 huts ranging from simple rock overhangs to fully serviced huts with gas cooking and heating.

Hut tickets or a annual hut pass are required for the majority of these huts which can be purchased at DOC offices. Having a ticket or annual pass doesn't guarantee a bed though, it works on a first come first served basis, except for huts on the great walks which require booking.

Your annual hut pass or standard ticket is not valid for the great walks during the booked walking season.

Latest Prices 2018

These do not include the Great Walks, they are a lot more expensive and the price varies from track to track and the time of year. For the Milford Track it is $140 a night in peak season (1/2 price if you are a New Zealander / free if a New Zealander under 17), The Kepler is $130 a night in peak season (1/2 price if a New Zealander / free if a New Zealander under 17). In the off season most huts are around $15 per person excluding the Abel Tasman which is $32 off season. Serviced Huts

These huts contain water supply, toilets, mattresses, hand washing facilities and heating with fuel available. They may have a warden.

Standard huts

Standard Huts have mattresses, water supply and toilets. Wood heaters are provided at huts below the bush line.

Basic huts/bivvies

Basic huts provide very basic shelter with limited facilities.

These are completely free.
