| I am planning a trip throughout all of New Zealand. I plan to land in Aukland and backpack both the North and South islands. Any advice on doing this would be appreciated. |

I will be walking from Aukland down to the Southern portion of the South island. Thank you for the two sites. Any tips or advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
I've got almost all of my supplies ready to go. Just waiting on the funds to get a nice hand-held GPS unit. I've got the polypros and other hiking clothes. I'm also going to be using an alcohol burning stove- light weight stove and fuel. I will be in a tent most of the time- I have a one man Kelty. |

Well I can't personally give you any tips as I have never done it, it is one heck of a walk! You may want to hire a mountain radio ( http://www.nzlsar.org.nz/mrs/wmrs/wmrsfaq.htm ) on certain parts of your walk as, especially in the South island, you will be in some pretty remote places, if you break a leg and no one knows where you are, it's game over. Also all the normal precautions like not crossing swollen rivers, bring plenty of warm clothes and high energy foods and make sure your map and compass skills are up to scratch (don't rely on a GPS).
Let us know how you got on when you get back. |

| Do you know of any good places where I can pick up maps? I checked the one siteyou said, and that is helpful, but I was wondering if there was a place that you know of where I could get contour maps of the country. |

| I'm planning on using a Trangia Backpacking stove. It burns denatured alcohol, and I was wondering how readily is this type of fuel available. |
