Camping in National Parks is a bit of a "who knows" sort of thing. Some places you can and others you can't. You aren't going to get thrown in the slammer if someone sees you, just camp away from a track and you will be alright. Best to check at the DoC office at that particular National Park.
What to bring? http://www.backpack-newzealand.com/nz/article15.php definately pick up some insect repellant. |

| I wouldn't call it cheating the system as many of us kiwis believe we have a right to camp and walk anywhere where we like in a National Park and in most parts we do, its just certain areas (roadside) where you are suppose to camp in designated areas which costs a small fee or in some cases free. These camp sites are independent from your hut ticket of camping ticket, they are call conservation camp sites ( http://www.doc.govt.nz/templates/summary.aspx?id=38354 ), these are accessible by vehicle. But if you want to make your own way and go walking through the bush you can camp where you please for free ( some restricted areas ). But if you are walking a track you are suppose to buy a ticket whether or not you are camping. Well that is my understanding. |
