My husband and I are planning to take three months touring around New Zealand, during which time we will be doing many tramps. We were planning on leaving behind an extra duffle bag for books, bulk food, extra clothes etc. while we are on the trail. Has anyone had experience trying to store bags while tramping? Do hostels allow you to store bags, and will they be safe? Am I doomed to carry this extra weight on the trail? Thanks!

Most hostels will allow you to store luggage, some only if you plan on coming back and staying a night ( http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:U-yCXrdk9RgJ:www.doc.govt.nz/Explore/002~Tracks-and-Walks/Great-Walks/Milford-Track/230~Transport,-equipment-and-accommodation.asp+gear+storage+&hl ). It depends on the hostel as to whether they will be safe or not, some have personal lockers/cabinets some just put it in a community store room.
