Hi,
My husband and I are in New Zealand for the month of July. The visit will begin with a week in Auckland to attend a conference. I have 8 days off for touring before an meeting in Wanganui, then 2 days to get to Dunedin. Then 7 days to travel then to Nelson followed by 3 days to get to Auckland for our return flight. Typing this out, it seems very quick, but, based on the great replies on this site, I hope we can get some suggestions. One thought I had was to fly one way and drive the other, but there is also drive down one way and return another. Also, is there a great deal out there in rental cars? ANY HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. Thanks, D & B |

As for rental cars, shop around and you might get a good deal as it is winter. |

If you don't go anywhere else, go to Queenstown.
Dead set most beautiful place in the world.
Drive down the middle, or east coast of the South Island. The west coast is not all that crash hot. |

| Well it depends on what you are into. Drive down the east coast of the South Island if you like driving past farm after farm (apart from north of Kaikoura and the Catlins), drive down the West Coast if you want to be surrounded in native forest, within reach of snow capped peaks, drive past pretty lakes and see glaciers. |

Reine and Garry,
Thank you for your suggestions. I found the car rentals very helpful. The problem I am finding is being able to rent a car to drive from North to South Islands and then the reverse. How can we avoid having to put a car on the ferry. Is there anyway we can drop off and then pick up on the other side?

| Try contacting Ace Rentals. I believe they have depots in Auckland, Wellington, Picton, Christchurch and Queenstown. |
