We will be van camping for 3 weeks in September. We also intend to do some overnight tramping so will need backpacks. Should we bring ours are is it practical to rent on the north island and return on the south island? Same for tents, etc.?

Hi Jeanie - it's possible to hire outdoor equipment in new zealand.

check out www.nzcampsite.co.nz - they hire camping equipment but told me they're moving into hiring trekking equipment soon too...service was great.
