Hi,
A friend and I are planning doing three? tramps in NZ late 2006/early
2007. We are both very fit and experienced trampers (bushwalkers) with
good navigational skills when tracks are poorly defined or non-existent.
The hard bit is narrowing down to just three tramps! (We have 19-20 days
alotted for the trip but this includes flying over to NZ and back home,
plus staying a night at a hotel between tramps, leaving about 15 days of
actual tramping). I've got the Lonely Planet "Tramping in NZ" guide,
which has helped a lot.
This is a very subjective question, I know, but from purely a scenic
point of view (forgetting crowd numbers, difficulty of walk etc.), out
of the following walks, which three would you pick.
1. Routeburn/Caples
2. Cascade Saddle combined with French Ridge
3. Rees-Dart
4. Wilkin-Young
5. Dusky
6. Keppler
7. Tuatapere Humpridge
8. Travers-Sabine
9. Other???
I know you may not have experience with all of these, just chasing a bit
of advice at this stage.
Cheers and Thanks,
Paul Zab |

Hi Paul and welcome. You have some crackers listed there. I havn't done Cascade Saddle yet but I have been told plenty of times it is a brilliant tramp. My partner has done the Travers Sabine and she absolutely loved it. I have done a part of Tuatapere Humpridge, we actually did the South Coast Track and planned to head up to Humpridge but the weather turned sour and we wouldn't of seen much, people say the views are awesome but if time is short I would proberbly give that one a miss. I did the rees-dart years ago and it was another good one, some brilliant views from the saddle. The routeburn is proberbly the best (and busiest) as far is scenery goes and the upper part of the caples is pretty, gets a bit monotonous at the end, so I would start at the Caples end and save the best for last. The kepler is another on my todo list, by all accounts it is excellent but very busy. The Dusky is often over looked, this one I had planned to do over summer until my plans changed to travel the UK, I have only met one person that has done it and like the Stewart Island North West Ciruit it is infamous for it's mud, but if remoteness is what you are after do this one.
So out of your list I would do Cascade Saddle combined with French Ridge, Routeburn/Caples and Travers-Sabine.
It really is a hard question as there isn't a track that I have done that I didn't enjoy. |
