My wife and I are planning a trip to NZ during one of the "shoulder seasons" to avoid the larger crowds of Dec and Jan. We'd definitely like to do some camping, and perhaps tramping as well.

If you were to try and do serious tramping in the Rockies or Sierra Nevada in the US, you'd be pretty hampered by snow until mid- to late-summer -- spring would be out. Are there areas that are snowbound during Oct/Nov or March that would restrict where we could go? What months define the snowy winter season down there?

Thanks in advance!!

Martin

Hi Martin, I wouldn't plan to do any tramping around July and August and early September in the Southern Alps and the same for the central north island (Tongariro) except for a valley tramp. Oct/Nov or March would be OK except if you plan on doing mountain climbing. If I were you I would plan to come over in March - April as them months are usually drier and often warmer than october - november, but it all depends on the year, the weather in NZ is getting crazier every year. Nice photos on your site by the way.
