A couple of buddies and I will be backpacking in New Zealand from May to June. I was hoping to get some suggestions on which tracks we should check out and that will also be plausible that time of year. We've hiked around Duluth, MN but nothing too extreme so we are fairly inexperienced. Is a guide something that we should check in to? I guess I don't know much at this point. Can anyone help?

You probably want to stick to valleys and low lying tracks during those months, probably the best time to do the Abel Tasman Coastal Track as it is extremely busy over summer and is literally a walk in park, maybe ring DoC and see if there are spaces on the Milford Track, you could also walk to the first hut on the routeburn. Also have a browse around http://tramper.co.nz or pick up a guide book (Lonely Planet Tramping, 101 Great Tramps)
