Hello everyone. I'm adventureED and I am a newly registered member as of today. I live in both Pennsylvania and West Virginia here in the USA. My girlfriend and I do a lot of backpacking, camping, and GEOCACHING (see www.geocaching.com ) In doing so we use the Global Positioning System (GPS) as a primary means of navigation and have our own GPS reciever. Picking up and monitoring GPS satellite signals in our area is relatively easy and for the most part unhampered in any way.
One of our greatest dreams is to someday backpack parts of NZ (hopefully soon). My questions are: How well does GPS work in NZ? Are there any blocks on satellite signals there? Would others that have backpacked in NZ recommend the use of GPS? _________________ TALLY HO!!! |

| Hi adventureED, I bring along a GPS when I am hiking. I have never had to much of a problem getting a signal except when under heavy forest cover. I would only really recommend using one is if you plan on hiking on a track that doesn't get much use or not sticking to a track at all, I would still bring along a compass though. Most of our hiking tracks are well marked. If you can afford it the polymedia software also works well with GPS's. |

Thanks Garry, for the quick reply. We've become so accustomed to using our GPS we just can't see leaving home without it. We generally carry a compass or two with us when backpacking as well. I will check out the polymedia software you mentioned just as soon as I can. Thanks again.

Has anyone used the Mapsource WorldMap GPS software in New Zealand?
I also have a related question. My GPS device has a car power adaptor -
the kind that plugs in the cigarette lighter socket. Does anyone know if these
sockets are internationally standard - more specifically, between US and
NZ car models?
Thanks,
Richard |

| Appliances that operate on power supplied by your car cigarette lighter will work just as well in a rental car overseas – 12 volt car batteries are standard. |
