Hi, my name is James, i'm from manchester in the UK and i will be finishing college in july 07. I am going straight to university but want to do some travelling first.
I would like to see some of new zealand but know very little about it. I will travel on a budget probably by coach or train or hitching most of the time. I will probably stay in hostels or campsites in a tent.
Basically i am looking for any more experienced travelers who will be in new zealand this summer who i can join up with for 1-4 weeks (between june, july or august, dates are flexible at the moment) or any other novices who want to come along with me.
If anyone is interested in coming or would like to take me with them for a few weeks then \please contact me. I am a sporty outgoing guy who can get along with all types of people of all ages.
Also if anyone has advice on where are the best places to start, where to travel to and what to see i would greatly appreciate any help.
Cheers
JAmes

"best places to start, where to travel to and what to see", it really depends on what you are into James. If you are after the scenery then the typical South Island journey Christchurch - Arthurs Pass - down the west coast - Haast Pass- Wanaka/Queenstown (Te Anau/Milford Sound) - Mount Cook - Christchurch is hard to beat especially if you only have a few weeks. Queenstown is where all the crazy stuffs done, bungy jumping, jetboating etc also a lively nightlife for a town of its size, same with wanaka. If you have more time try and head up to Nelson and explore the 3 national parks in the area or just soak and be lazy on the golden beaches in abel tasman national park. Kaikoura a couple of hours north of christchurch is where you can go whale watching or get a feed of crayfish.
The north island has more in the way of Maori culture where you can stay at a marae ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marae ) or have a hangi ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hangi ). The central north island (Rotorua) has alot of the thermal stuff geysers, hot water pools, boiling mud etc as well as volcanoes in the area. The coromandel peninsular( south and east of Auckland) has beautiful beaches, hot water beach (where you can dig up the sand and hot water comes through), and some nice bush walks. Northland has the Kauri forests, 90 mile beach and the best climate in the country. Most visitors prefer the south island over the north as do I.
You will have no problem hooking up with people once you arrive, most of the hostels have messageboards with like minded travellers looking for the same, it maybe a good idea if you can hookup with others and rent a car, they are a lot cheaper than the UK. |

When are you planning on going?
I am a first-time backpacker heading out this summer. It's the summer before I go to university, too. I've kind of got a general route planned out but I need people to go with!
