Anyone got any ideas on whats the saftest way to ensure no one can get into rucksacks whilst in transit ie: planes,coaches...etc. Ive seen the big steel "mesh" that one can wrap around the pac and lock are they worth it? Also im slightly paranoid about being robbed in the hostels...is security good in these places. Hate to sound like a wuss....but ive spent a fortune on camping kit and cant afford to replace it when im over there! Any tips will be greatly apreciated! Cheers!

Hi Carl, I am not sure how well those mesh things work, I guess they would be a deterent to opportunists, anyone determind to steal stuff from you will take the whole bag or find a way in. So just a few padlocks should do the trick. Also take you most valuable stuff as carry on and what you can't carry with you pack it at the bottom of your pack.
As for hostels the majority of them a safe, hostel owners are getting more vigilant with who they allow to stay. A hostel I worked at for a few years now require a passport for identification as the thiefs are usually New Zealanders who aren't travelling. Also a large percentage of hostels have a secure area where you can leave valuables and pay a little extra. Also stay in smaller dorm rooms. |

Thanks for the adivce Garry...once again . Not sure of how long to stay when i come over tell me...if you had only six weeks..which would be your favourite walks to do? Ive heard that Queenstown is a bit touristy...so i may give that a miss.
Cheers and once again....great site!

You probably want a bit of variety. So I would do one alpine, either the cascade saddle (fit) I haven't done this track yet, but I have been told it is a good one, Travers Sabine (medium) or the Tablelands (easy). Probably the Travers Sabine. Then a valley track, The Wilkin Valley is apparently another good track. And a coastal track, The Heaphy or the Stewart Island North West Circuit. I would also consider doing the Stafford Bay Track, especially if you haven't got the time to do the North West Circuit, it is quite remote for such a short and accessible track, and the coastline is stunning on a nice day. No matter which tracks you do you won't be disappointed.
Yeah I don't think much of Queenstown either, it's a money trap. The scenery isn't all that great, Glenorchy end of Lake Wakatipu is much nicer IMO. |
