Sure you can camp in the National and Forest Parks. There are some restrictions on camping on the great walks. But every other track you can bring along a tent and camp where you like.
Camping is not restricted to or near walking tracks though, you can walk where ever you like in the National and Forest Parks and pitch a tent.

| Garry, I am a scout leader from the UK. Dec 04 we are bringing 10 youngsters, 15 1/2 to 18 yrs to NZ. They will be carrying out something we call the Explorer Belt award. Following link describes aims, objectives etc.http://www.scoutbase.org.uk/library/hqdocs/badges/explorer-eb.htm. Over 10 days the will make their way from various drop of points along the Bay of Plenty to Taupo, about 160km in total. My questions are can they camp anywhere or do they have to use registered camp sites? Is there a list of free NZ campsites on the web? [/url] |

Hi everybody, I'm also asking almost the same questions. For example how if I want to have a little more adventure and I like Camping for instance on beaches? Is it permitted? Do I break the law in this way? Do I have to pay something If the local authorities cathch me doing this? Where can I find informations about that?
BTW, I'm from Slovenia (Europe), and here the law doesn't permit actions like this. |

Hi Davec, I am not to sure about the Bay of Plenty region. I am guessing that most of the land around that region is privately owned. So they won't be able to just pitch a tent anywhere and would have to stay at camping grounds. Have you tried contacting the local scout group in the Bay of Plenty http://homepage.ihug.co.nz/~gro-skc/telys/scouts/bop.html .
Hi Schtap, I am not to sure what the law is. The beaches in New Zealand are publicly owned. It really depends on where in New Zealand you are, you wouldn't want to camp on a beach close to a major city or town but in a remote area like the West Coast of the South Island I often just camp on the beach. The police would just tell you to pack up if you aren't allowed to camp there. I think it all depends on the local council ( http://www.gdc.govt.nz/res/res1.html ). Just plead ignorant and tell them you thought it was allowed unless there is a "No Camping" sign.
We have around 15,000 km of coastline and only 4 million people, so you can imagine there is plenty of beaches where no one will see you. |
