I am a Chinese in China. I have been hiking and mountaineering for years in China. I wanna spend 10-15 days doing long hiking in NZ some time next year. Can anyone recommend the best trail and best season?
Thanks

Hi Sherpa, Summer/early Autumn is the best months weather wise. I am not sure about the "best" as there are so many tracks. One that I have been wanting to do for years and will do when I get back to NZ is from Arthurs Pass to Nelson Lakes ( http://www.martinot-nz.info/nztrek/j.htm - http://www.martinot-nz.info/nztrek/j2.htm ) that would take about 11 days.

Thanks Gary! That is a great trail and I'll certainly think about it.
Is it fine to do solo trekking there for a woman?

I have done plenty of tracks and come across solo women. My girlfriend did this one by herself ( http://www.backpack-newzealand.com/articles/topic103.php - but met someone on the track). But it is always better to hike with a companion for safety reasons, i.e if you fall and break a leg etc.

hehe - I'll try not to fall and break my legs if I have to go alone.
I could fly directly to south island. Since I have no friends there, I've got no idea about the local transportation in there and how I get to the start point of the track and how I could get back to the city etc.
I'll take time to read stuff on your website when I am free, and at meantime, would you kindly give some links regarding information what foreign hikers should do to hike in NZ?
Thank you in advance.
