What is the preferred cooker in NZ
as far as fuel availability, efficiency for climate etc.
I have been looking at trangiers for sheer ease of use
but not sure if canisters are cheaper
or whats better for long tramps

Cheers,

I personally use a white spirit stove (MSR wisperlite) as they are cheaper to run and require less fuel, but gas canisters are more popular as they are initially cheaper. I think trangia's are cheaper to run then multifuel/white spirits then gas, but trangia's don't burn as hot and can take a while to boil water.

If you have the money I would get a whitespirit/multifuel stove (white spirits is easy to find in NZ) but get a multifuel if you plan do do a lot of travelling as white spirits is hard to find in some countries.

What ever you choose you won't have a problem purchasing the fuel as there are camping stores in every reasonably sized town and whitespirits can also be brought at shell petrol stations (shellite) as can methylated spirits for a trangia.
