I was really intrigued by the idea of tramping the n. island, if not all of nz, but I have a couple questions:
1. since the track is not official, is it pretty much just get a map and go, while trying to stay off private property?
2. I'm arriving in mid-may and am unsure whether the route is safe for winter tramping. are their summits?

you can get basic info on the route from the trail stories on the site
Eric martinot's has some pretty detailed stuff.
you can contact the trust to find out a bit more about the route...
As far as winter tramping, theres a lot of summit stuff in the south island by the looks of it, but i'm not sure how much in the north island... |
