ChristchurchChristchurch is the largest city in the South Island with a population of 320,000. It is often described as the most english city outside of England and punting down the Avon River or taking a tram ride down Worcester Street definitely gives you the felling that you are in England itself. The square is the heart of Christchurch with the Anglican Cathedral the main focal point. During the summer months the square becomes a hive of activity with stalls, live bands and the amusing wizard giving his views on life. Things to do The usual activities will be found in Christchurch a museum, art gallery and gardens. There is also Orana Park Wildlife Trust and Willowbank in the way of zoos, willowbank has a good selection of native wildlife including a kiwi house. Other attractions include the International Antarctic Centre, Christchurch Tram and the Gondola where you will get nice views looking across towards the Southern Alps. Accommodation If you are flying into Christchurch you will need to either catch a shuttle bus ~$15, bus $4 or taxi ~$25 into the city as none of the hostels (as far as I know) do a pickup for the airport.
