Kea
Latin name: Nestor notabilis
Category: Endemic
Status: Common
Characterisics: 46 cm, the worlds only alpine parrot.
Distribution: Mainly in alpine zone, but also in forest and descends to lowland river flats. Common in Mount Cook, Arthurs Pass and parts of Kahurangi National Park, Nelson Lakes and in some of the ski fields.
One of my favorite New Zealand birds, the Kea is a large cheeky alpine parrot, very playful, not to be feed. Feeding them gives them lots of energy and spare time, therefore instead of spending their time looking for food they use it to rip apart your tent, car rubber seals etc.
