Purakaunui Bay and Falls

If you take the SH92 heading north from Papatowai you'll see the signs pointing to the Matai falls on the Maclennan River. It's a short walk and if I remember vaguely probably took about 30mins round-trip. It's full of mistletoe and must be quite beautiful when in bloom. Moving swiftly on, signs will direct you along rough, road heading southeast which will take you to Purakaunui Falls. The step-like cascades are magnificent after heavy rain. Just beyond, adventurous surfers are attracted to the wild surf at Purakaunui Bay.
