At Tikitiki keep an eye out for the Anglican Church which has fused the spirit of two cultures and its architecture is Maori in inspiration. Make Ruatoria your next stop if only to stock up at the local supermarket. It's the best place to see an essentially Maori town today. It's a rural, rustic township where you're likely to see the local policeman having a chat to passersby and where the pace of life is more akin to that of 100 years ago than the 21st century. (Don't be taken in by the seeming peacefullness of the place as Ruatoria is known to keep its policemen busy controlling fights and the like).
