Hick's Bay
Some 45km down the road you'll come to Hick's Bay or Wharekahika. The bay was named after Lieutenant Hick who was the first European to spot it aboard the Endeavour). The bay was the site of the Hau Hau uprising in 1860 and some of the pa sites in the area were modified at the time so as to accommodate musket fighting warfare. The bay is safe for swimming, is known for its plentiful crayfish and also provides a pleasant backdrop for horseriding in the area. 1830 saw the greatest tragedy in the history of the bay. A Maori girl's wedding to a Pakeha turned from a day of celebration for the locals to a day celebration for an enemy tribe who interrupted the festivities and turned the guests into their supper. Take a look at the Tuwhakairia Marae while you're here as it is probably one of the best on the Cape.
