The Kepler Track is located in Fiordland National Park is a popular circuit track starting just 5km from Te Anau.
The best time to walk this track is during the summer months as snow and ice may cause parts of the alpine section to be closed. Even during the summer months trampers should be well equipped for all conditions. A reasonable fitness level is also also required as there is some climbing to and traversing alpine tops.
During the summer months the 3 huts on the kepler track are provided with heating, gas for cooking, mattresses, running water and flush toilets. A hut warden will be present and a hut ticket must be pre purchase.
Beech is the main forest tree within the surrounding area with mountain, silver and red beech at lower altitudes alongside kamahi, and podocarps such as miro, rimu, kahikatea and totara and silver beech around the tree line.
