Not Your Average Backpackers! Situated just five minutes walk from Russell Wharf in New Zealand's beautiful Bay of Islands, Pukeko Cottage is definitely not your average Backpackers.

High on the hill, looking out to the Bay, this 1920’s ‘character’ cottage enjoys a superb location with beaches, cafes, restaurants and tourist attractions all within easy walking distance.

No dormitories, just comfortable beds in well appointed bedrooms, with cosy living areas and an extensive garden to relax in. You are welcome to make yourself at home here at Pukeko Cottage.

Pukeko is just a small cottage with no dormitiries. Women travelling alone will feel safe and will always be given the option of having a girls only room if available.

This was such a find - absolutely loved staying at Pukeko Cottage, the best place we've stayed so far. It was quiet and homely and the owners made us feel really welcome, inviting us to make ourselves at home in their cottage. It was so different from anywhere else we have stayed - it was almost like being in a little musuem. The kitchen is old fashioned but had every tool we could possibly need to prepare our meal. A real bonus was the little deck off our room with a beautiful view of sailing boats moored in the bay. The bathroom was a bit basic as like everywhere in Russell they rely on tankwater so if it hasn't been raining - you're asked to keep your shower short!! The owner was really helpful with ideas about where to go after Russell - we changed our original plans and he was right! Definitely we'd go back. Russell itself was great. Loved the beaches, even though it was winter it was sunny and so pretty.
